Teaching Performing Marketing

It has been a while since my last blog but a few things have happened in the last couple of weeks that I feel are worth mentioning.

This is our last week at Rossett Dance before we close for six weeks of summer...I won't lie, I am looking forward to the break! It has been a hectic few weeks but very positive!

Our local school had a fete last weekend that I managed to get involved in which was really good fun and it was luckily one of the hottest days we've had so far!
It was a chance to mix and mingle with more of the locals in the village but also my chance to spread the word about Rossett Dance.

I had  a few hundred fliers printed and handed them out at the fete. I do a lot of door dropping to market the dance classes but as I have mentioned in the past, I have found that one of the best ways to get people interested in the dance school is by talking to them in person. This way is probably successful because they can judge my character and personality, hopefully seeing how passionate I am about the dance school and I'm also able to answer any questions that they may have.

I was extremely pleased with how the fete went and I'm happy to say that I've already had a few enquirers by phone and email regarding starting the classes. As we do have one more week left before closing for summer I can offer them a free taster session and hopefully if they like it, I can put their name down for September.

At the school fete putting in a bit of marketing!

What happened a few weeks ago reminded me of what we were talking about on the last module regarding the importance of networking and contacts to benefit our careers.

Even though I teach almost every day I do still like to squeeze in a bit of performing, so about two months ago I started looking around the usual dance sites such as The Stage and Starnow, to see what performing jobs were available and the auditions that were coming up. I came across one job that I was particularly interested in as it was a UK tour that performed at weekends. This would be brilliant for me as it wouldn't really affect my teaching. Another plus side was that I knew the company very well as one of my good friends had been with the show for four years.

I rung my friend to ask her if she felt I would be right for the show and worth me auditioning. My friend thought I would be and so she was kind enough to contact the company manager to advise her that I would be auditioning and that she would highly recommend me. A few days later, I went along to the audition and got the job.

About a fortnight after that, the same friend contacted me via facebook asking if I would be free for certain dates this year. I said that I was and asked her why. My friend is currently the dance captain for a UK tribute show and is responsible for the recruitment of dancers. The show was suddenly in need of a replacement dancer and she thought I would be up for the job. I definitely was!

So in the past few weeks I have received two new performing jobs by recommendation! I think that's worth cheering about!
